How to choose a gimbal in India
A gimbal uses motors on three axes to hold your camera or phone level while you walk, run or pan. It removes the shake that in-body stabilisation cannot fully fix. Start with what you will mount on it.
Phone gimbal or camera gimbal
Smartphone gimbals are small, fold down and pair with an app for face tracking and timelapse. Options include the DJI Osmo Mobile 8, the Osmo Mobile SE, the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro and the Hohem iSteady V3 AI.
Camera gimbals carry a mirrorless camera or a DSLR. DJI makes the RS range, from the RS3 Mini and RS4 Mini up to the RS4 Pro and RS5. Zhiyun-Tech makes the WEEBILL and CRANE ranges, and Feiyu Tech makes the SCORP range.
Check the payload before anything else
Every camera gimbal has a maximum payload. Weigh your camera body with the lens you plan to use, plus any microphone or cage, and check it is well under the gimbal's rated limit. A gimbal near its limit struggles to balance and drains its battery faster. A small body with a kit zoom suits a mini gimbal. A full-frame body with a large zoom needs a full-size or Pro model.
DJI gimbal or another brand
Most people search for a DJI gimbal first. DJI RS models work with DJI video transmitters, and the RS5 combo adds an AI tracking module. Zhiyun-Tech gimbals are a strong alternative, with some kits bundling a video transmitter and focus controller. Check camera control support for your exact body before buying, since compatibility lists differ by brand. Browse the DJI range to compare models side by side.
Standard or combo kit
Combo kits usually add accessories such as a phone holder, a focus motor, a carry case or an extra grip. If you pull focus while moving or shoot for clients, a combo saves buying parts later. For casual use, the standard kit is enough.
What else you will need
- A lens with manual focus control, or a focus motor, if you need focus changes mid shot
- A tripod or support for locked-off shots between gimbal moves
- An on-camera microphone, since gimbal motors can be heard by the built-in mic
Practise balancing at home before a shoot. A well balanced setup runs quieter and longer.
