How to choose a DSLR camera in India

A DSLR uses a mirror and an optical viewfinder, so you see the scene directly through the lens. Canon and Nikon have moved new development to mirrorless, but a DSLR still suits some buyers well.

Who should still buy a DSLR

• You already own EF, EF-S or Nikon F mount lenses and want a body that fits them directly.
• You prefer an optical viewfinder with no lag or screen glare.
• You want long battery life, since the viewfinder draws no power.
• You are learning photography and want physical controls and a large grip.

If you are starting from zero and care about video, compare against mirrorless cameras as well. Mirrorless bodies usually track faces better in video and are lighter to carry.

Sensor size: APS-C or full-frame

APS-C DSLRs are lighter and cheaper, and their lenses cost less. Nikon calls this format DX. Full-frame, which Nikon calls FX, gives cleaner images in low light and a shallower depth of field, but the bodies and lenses are larger.

Matching a DSLR to your level

First camera: the Canon EOS 1500D with EF-S 18-55mm IS II has a 24.1 megapixel APS-C sensor, an optical viewfinder and built-in Wi-Fi and NFC for sending photos to your phone. The kit zoom covers everyday scenes.

Enthusiast: the Nikon D7500 is a DX body with a 20.9 megapixel sensor, a 51-point autofocus system, about 8 frames per second and 4K UHD video at 30p. It suits sport, birds and travel.

High resolution: the Nikon D850 has 45.7 effective megapixels and records 4K UHD video. It suits landscape, product and studio work where you crop or print large.

Lenses decide the results

A kit lens is fine to start. The first upgrade most people notice is a fast prime, such as a 50mm, for portraits and low light, or a telephoto zoom for wildlife and sport. Browse DSLR lenses and check the mount before you buy.
